Students to be asked to register for warning service

The tragic shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007 and Northern Illinois University in February were a parent’s worst nightmare. For UC Davis, these national incidents underscored the importance of quickly notifying members of the campus community of an emergency that requires them to take action.

This fall, the university will ask students to provide personal contact information for a new notification service that is among the ways the university shares vital information with the campus community during an emergency.

Parent to parent: The do’s and don’ts of the visit

Our daughter’s voice on the other end of the phone, halfway across the country at college, wasn’t encouraging.

Come out and visit if you must, she said, “but I won't have much time to spend with you.”

Oh. Never mind that we had booked the flights. Never mind that we had booked the grandmother (to watch our youngest at home). And never mind that our daughter was the one who suggested the visit in the first place.

Up for discussion: College rankings

Choosing the right college can be nerve-wracking — a student will likely find his or her life direction there. It’s no wonder, then, that many students and their parents use college rankings to compare and select schools.

But rankings may not be the best source of information when choosing a college, said Mitchel Benson, who, as interim assistant vice chancellor for University Communications, watches the rankings.

Briefly speaking: Students welcome e-mail system

The UC Davis e-mail system is getting a makeover as the campus adopts Google Inc.’s Gmail for student accounts. The switch from the homegrown Geckomail service, beginning next week, gives students use of an e-mail system that is rich with features and provides access to Google applications that make it easier for students to work together.
